Zone Zero Taking Shape
In our last newsletter there were many questions about what new State regulations would look like with regards to Zone Zero. There was speculation about whether or not it would be a completely non-combustible zone or allow for some “safer” vegetation. Would the distance from the structure me a minimum of five feet? How would the new regulations be implemented?
As the effort to sort out these, and other issues, began in late 2025, we have seen the situation become a polarizing one. Wildfire preparedness advocates support stronger regulations and proponents of robust gardens and landscaping argued for less stringent regulations.
On March 17, 2026 The California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection released a draft proposal on new regulations. Interestingly, they chose to use the length of the overhang of a structure’s eaves as a component to the zone boundary. Directly under the eave would be a strict non-combustible zone while the additional distance out to five feet would be considered a low-combustibility zone. This means that some vegetation would be allowed with certain conditions. Other items, such as trees, fences and gates, and local conditions are also being taken into consideration.
The Committee should be commended for crafting thoughtful regulations that take into account fire science as well as the desires of residents. The legislation is still being drafted, so if you would like to read about the details and even contribute to the process you can do so by going to this link…
